Great Hearts Journey: Scholar to Educator

Ms. Stevens teaching a music class

Great Hearts has always been known for its dedication to the arts and its commitment to providing a great classical education to its scholars. One amazing example of this commitment is Roosevelt’s K-2nd Music teacher Laura Stevens, who not only attended a Great Hearts School but is now continuing to teach the beauty of music that she once learned to love herself.

Ms. Stevens began attending Great Hearts in 7th grade. She knew she always wanted to work with kids in some capacity, but it was at Great Hearts that she realized she wanted to become a teacher. As a Great Hearts student, she loved the dedication of the teachers and the importance they placed on the Arts. She loved that the Arts were just as vital as the other subjects being taught. Her teacher played a big part in nurturing her passion for music, with the concept that it doesn’t matter what it sounds like when you’re creating music as long as you’re enjoying it. Her music teacher went past the curriculum and into the caring part of teaching. That is what Ms. Stevens carries with her today in her classes.

Now, as a music teacher at Roosevelt, Ms. Stevens wants to continue to share the impact that music can have. It is a passion of hers to expose as many different types of music, including singing, music theory, and different types of instruments, to her students. It is her desire to create an environment where scholars can learn music by exploring their creativity, and the joy they get from it. She teaches her students to not worry about right or wrong. Whatever sound they are making is music, and it is an expression of themselves. Music is a way for them to release what’s in their heart.

We are so grateful for the impact that Great Hearts has had on once a scholar, now a teacher. We are even more thankful that Ms. Stevens was able to find her passion at Great Hearts and is able to continue to teach students to be passionate about music. Thank YOU, for supporting Roosevelt! We are beyond appreciative to all our families who support Roosevelt. If you have not yet set up your community investment, it’s never too late. Please take the time to start today.
