Great Hearts Class of 2023 Earned More Than $67million in Scholarships

Great Hearts Academies September 15, 2023

Year after year, Great Hearts scholars continue to surpass their peers across the nation in meaningful measures, and the 727 graduates that made up the Great Hearts Class of 2023 is no exception. Graduates from our academies in both Arizona and Texas earned a total of $67,961,612 in merit-based scholarships. Arizona scholars graduated with an average weighted GPA of 4.14, an average SAT score of 1268, +218 points above the national average, and an average ACT score of 24, +4.2 points above the national average. Texas has a smaller pool of graduates with fewer schools than Arizona. Great Hearts academies in the Lone Star state graduated with an average weighted GPA of 4.11, an average SAT score of 1208, +158 points above the national average, and an impressive ACT score average of 26, +6.2 points above the national average.

Superintendent Brandon Crowe spoke highly of the 579 Great Hearts Arizona students who graduated in 2023, 47% of which graduated with honors. “These young men and women are some of the most insightful, humane, and passionate young people residing in our great state. We are humbled and blessed to serve the families of the Phoenix area by partnering with parents to provide morally and intellectually excellent leaders for our future.” 75% of Great Hearts Arizona Seniors earned a merit-based scholarship totaling $50,959,952.

In addition, nine of our graduates were National Merit Finalists and 22 were National Merit Commended. “Scoring in the top 1% in the state of Arizona is a very realistic goal for many juniors across the Great Hearts network,” said Great Hearts Director of College Counseling, Roslyn Fletcher. “We expose our high school students to the PSAT early by administering the official PSAT to all 10th grade students across the network. This exposure along with encouraging students to utilize free, personalized test prep through Khan Academy generally result in 6 to 12 Semifinalists/Finalists each year. National Merit Finalists typically have the opportunity to pursue merit scholarships that cover full tuition and sometimes even more at many institutions across the country.” Read more about our 2023 National Merit Finalists at https://www.greatheartsamerica.org/2023-national-merit-finalists-from-great-hearts/.

While we do not rely on scores as the holistic benchmark for human formation, we do appreciate the weight of this remarkable achievement and recognize that it is a result of the exceptional care and dedication of the academy. Great Hearts Academies provide a classical education that forms the whole student with a great heart, not just a great mind.

As Great Hearts co-founder Dr. Daniel Scoggin remarked, “Our Great Hearts seniors are so accomplished. While we are proud of their accomplishments on college-going measures, we are most moved by their virtuous character and the unique calling each has to serve a greater good beyond themselves.”

Graduates throwing their caps up in the air

We are grateful to every family, teacher, and friend who has loved and supported the Class of 2023 along this journey, and we look forward to hearing the great accomplishments of our scholars as they continue to pursue Truth, Goodness, and Beauty into adulthood.
