The Kinder Readiness program at Great Hearts Harveston in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, proved to be a positive experience for its young scholars. Over the course of two weeks, from June 3 to June 14, incoming kindergarten students were introduced to the foundational elements of their future education while becoming familiar with the school environment and routines.

They practiced essential school behaviors, such as addressing teachers, walking in a line, and proper lunchtime conduct. Academically, they were introduced to letter names and sounds, number awareness, virtues, and classic literature.

In the second week, scholars participated in a ‘show and share’ activity. One scholar was very proud to tell his classmates about a sunflower that he helps take care of with his family. Another student, who didn’t know what a book was at the beginning of the program, soon wanted to demonstrate the parts of a book and even had a favorite bedtime story.

Vincent Tolliver, who oversees the Kinder Readiness program at the academy, observed wonderful progress among the participants and noted the absence of tears for these first-time students. “Our scholars enjoyed coming to Kinder Readiness and wanted to show their parents what they did at the end of the day. It was a joy seeing them become friends, and I hope they keep that excitement of seeing each other again in August.”

Parents also recognized the program’s benefits. “The most beneficial part for us was getting him used to being away from me and accustomed to a school setting. I know that he will start the school year with confidence because of the Kinder Readiness Program,” said one parent. Another parent valued the opportunity for her child to get accustomed to the new environment and classroom routine. Many parents echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of acclimating their child to the new school before the academic year begins this fall.

Great Hearts Harveston is a growing public charter school in Baton Rouge’s Harveston neighborhood. With a focus on classical education, the school aims to empower students through a liberal arts curriculum that includes literature, history, fine arts, language, and math. The Kinder Readiness program is an integral part of this mission, preparing young students for a successful kindergarten year by introducing them to essential school concepts and core values such as integrity, humility, courage, and citizenship.

Tolliver recently highlighted the importance of these initiatives in bridging academic gaps and enhancing student-teacher interactions when he spoke to Baton Rouge Parents. He explained that the Kinder Readiness program helps develop initial relationships with peers and teachers, setting the stage for a positive learning environment. “We want to help them feel comfortable instead of nervous about being away from a parent or guardian,” said Tolliver.

Reflecting on the program’s success, Tolliver expressed his joy in witnessing the scholars’ growth. “Just seeing them advance with their social skills and be excited about the things they have learned throughout the school day is really fun,” he said.
