Meet the Multi-Talented and Multi-Tasker, Laura Scott

Great Hearts Academies November 6, 2023

Laura ScottMeet Laura Scott, a dedicated recruiter of the National Faculty Talent Team at Great Hearts Academies, who brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role. Scott has roots in Ohio, but has been calling Arizona home for the past 8 years. “I love sunshine and warm weather, and enjoying the outdoors year-round,” said Scott. Her journey in education started at Brigham Young University in Utah, where she studied Family Sciences and Marriage and Family Therapy.

Having lived in various parts of the Midwest and the east coast, Laura’s diverse background enriches her approach to education. “Before joining Great Hearts, our family homeschooled classically,” she said. “We read a lot of books and history, and learned Latin as a family, and have great memories together. Our experiences dovetailed wonderfully with the aims of a Great Hearts education, and when I accepted a job at Archway Lincoln we were welcomed into that wonderful community.”

For three years, Laura taught Latin to 3rd-5th graders at Archway Lincoln, leaving an indelible mark on young minds. In the summer of 2022, a fortuitous move and marriage to Dr. Clay Scott, Headmaster of Archway Trivium, led Laura to the West Valley. Around the same time, a position on the talent team opened, presenting Laura with a dream job opportunity.

In her current role, Laura connects with professors and students at colleges and universities nationwide. “[I love] getting to know them and connecting over the mission of Great Hearts. I love when our values and aims resonate with students who are on the cusp of adult life, launching their careers,” she said. “Mostly, I just love working with the wonderful members of the talent team—each of my colleagues inspires me with their talents and love for this work.”

Laura also enjoys putting her creative flair to use in graphic design, creating engaging content for social media and swag items. “Back in July I stayed up until 2am one night working on the design of the stickers which we give away at fairs,” recalled Scott. “The set of books depicted captures the beauty and progression of our curriculum, with each book representing a year of joyful reading. I love that our students read beloved children’s classics such as ‘Little Bear’ and ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and march on through Narnia and Shakespeare to Dostoevsky, Plato, and Virgil. A liberal arts education invites students and teachers alike into the great conversation with the great thinkers and writers of the past, and it’s nice to have a concise way to share that!”

Three brothers on Trivium Prep Varsity Football teamOutside of her professional life, Laura is a proud parent to eight Great Hearts scholars. Her children’s vibrant personalities and sense of humor infuse joy into their household. As if that weren’t impressive enough, Laura moonlights as a taxi driver for her kids, shuttling them to sports practices (she had three varsity football players this year), clubs, and theater rehearsals. A recent cross-country road trip spanning 3,000 miles in six days left Laura’s family with unforgettable memories and reinforced the importance of cherishing family bonds.

In Laura, Great Hearts has a staff member who not only embodies the spirit of classical education but also treasures the profound impact it has on both students and families. With an unwavering dedication to her role and a deep love for her own family, Laura is a shining example of the values that define the Great Hearts community.
