This Snowman Will Melt Your Heart

Every year, artwork is submitted from our scholars throughout our academies and one piece is chosen to be featured on the cover of the Great Hearts holiday card. This year, the selected art is a striking, hand-painted piece from Selah Thompson, a 2nd grader at Archway North Phoenix. This delightful snowman with cool blues and purple hues shows her mastery of the difficult and unforgiving medium of watercolor.

Student with her art teacher and artworkSelah’s art instructor, Ellen Berger, gave her students instructions for the artwork that was done on the students’ own time without any help from parents. It was stressed that this was to be original art.

The piece was created with thought and care. Selah’s mother told Ms. Berger that Selah spent hours on it and started over multiple times. “Art is her passion!”

“Selah has been in my art class for kindergarten, first grade, and now second grade,” said Berger. “She has always been very conscientious about her art. She is focused and seems to want to show her best. A quieter student, Selah also has the quality of being humble about her talent. She’s really a delightful young girl!”

Her homeroom teacher, Melissa Moore, commended Selah’s achievement. “Selah is an exemplary student who is very dedicated to art and her education. She is always striving to uphold the virtues that we embrace as a Great Hearts community. It is wonderful to see her perseverance and joy for art bring about such a beautiful painting.”

We are grateful to Selah for sharing her talent with Great Hearts and all the recipients of the holiday card. We look forward to seeing this young artist continue to grow in Truth, Goodness, and Beauty.
