‘Tis the Season to Submit Artwork for the Great Hearts Holiday Card

Great Hearts Academies October 24, 2024

The holidays are quickly approaching. While we may only be in October, Great Hearts is looking ahead to the holiday season to find student artwork to grace the cover of our annual Holiday Card.

SUBMIT YOUR HOLIDAY ARTWORK

Throughout the years, the selected artwork featured on the cover of the card vividly display holiday cheer, warmth, and happiness through watercolor, oil paints, charcoal, and more. The creative mediums used for the artwork are limited only to our young artists’ imaginations.

Last year, out of a record 175 entries, the selected art is a heart-warming, acrylic painted piece titled, “Wintery Dream” from Lydia Luehrs, a sophomore at Great Hearts Anthem. This beautiful winter-scape prominently features a large pine tree with intricate details including the snow dusted branches that looms over a small snow bunny who has left a miniscule trail of prints in the fresh snow.

She explained how she artfully showed dimension in the painting by using less detail and muted colors on the background trees in stark contrast to the darker colors and more visible details in the foreground. This attention to depth and distance displays her mastery of painting landscapes, which can often appear flat on a canvas.

“We ask lot of our students day to day, so when we see students who go above and beyond to participate in a contest like this it really is just amazing,” said Anthem Headmaster Zack Withers. “Lydia is so talented in so many ways. We’re just so proud of her.”

Luehrs encouraged other Great Hearts scholars to submit an entry this year. “Even if you don’t win, it’s fun to get to be a part of the competition and enjoy the painting while you’re doing it,” she said.

If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for consideration, please go to https://arizona.greatheartsamerica.org/holiday-card/ and fill out the form. Please note that if your artwork is selected, we will send a professional photographer out to capture the image. Please do not discard the artwork once you’ve submitted the form.

This contest is open to all students enrolled at Great Hearts in grades K-12. We do ask that the student completes 100% of the artwork without parent guidance. All submissions are due before midnight on Tuesday, October 29th. If you have questions, please reach out to Mackenzie.English@greathearts.org.

Encourage your young artist to participate and create a holiday masterpiece and, if selected, have their artwork shared with others this season and join the ranks of Selah Thompson and other previous great-hearted artists who have had their work displayed in such a meaningful way.

We are grateful to all who are willing to share their talent with Great Hearts and all the recipients of the holiday cards, and we look forward to seeing some exceptional submissions this year. Who knows, your art may just sleigh the competition!

If you have a story you’d like to see featured by Great Hearts, please contact Jason Moore at jason.moore@greathearts.org.
