Nick Hutchison and Sir Jonathan Bate bios for 2024 Symposium for Classical Education

You won’t want to miss the return of Sir Jonathan Bate and Nick Hutchison to the 2024 National Symposium for Classical Education, hosted by the Great Hearts Institute on March 20-22 at the Phoenix Convention Center. They will once again be teaming up to bring back a popular workshop from last year, Whose Shakespeare Is It, Anyway? “But this year we’re going to do something slightly different,” explained Hutchison. “We’re going to work together looking at editorial choices and what difference they make interms of theatrical performance. So, comparing editors down the centuries with what actually gets up onto a stage.” This dynamic and interactive workshop will explore editorial choices since the First Folio of 1623.

As a self-proclaimed Shakespeare fanatic, Bate is excited to show you how Shakespeare’s texts have changed down the ages. “And how there are fascinating choices that every actor [and] every reader can make when they encounter Shakespeare,” he said. Bate is Regents Professor of Literature and Foundation Professor of Environmental Humanities at Arizona State University. He was formerly Provost of Worcester College, Oxford University. The author of 20 books, he is a world-renowned expert on Shakespeare, the Romantic movement and ecological approaches to the arts and humanities. His biographies of the poets John Clare, Ted Hughes and William Wordsworth all won prizes and awards. Knighted for his services to literary scholarship, his most recent book is a memoir about his life with literature called Mad about Shakespeare.

The Symposium will focus on renewing the Great Conversation concerning great works and perennial ideas. This year we will underscore the importance of teaching and modeling the conversations that lead to insight–among colleagues, between teachers and students, with families, and across our communities. At a time when our society most needs genuine dialogue, classical schools provide a sanctuary of genuine civility. Join us to discover how classical education embodies the good conversations, providing both the means and the model for a more civil society.
